Perhaps you could look into Samba. it can make a linux server act like a Domain Controller (if i remember right, not sure thought), and can create file shares that are 100% compatible with Windows Answered Apr, 29 2011

check that your privileges are set to your user name and not ‘system’

1.

Open Windows Explorer.
2.

Navigate to the folder in which you want to store the files from the FTP directory. For example, if you want to copy files from an FTP directory to "C:\temp\myFiles," navigate to that folder.
3.

Hold down the "Shift" key and right-click an empty area in the Explorer window. A drop-down menu will appear.
4.

Click "Open Command Window Here." Windows will open a "Command" window for the directory.
5.

Type "ftp xyz.com" (without quotes) into the "Command" window, replacing "xyz.com" with the FTP server's name. Press "Enter." Windows will connect to the FTP site and prompt you for your user ID.
6.

Type in your user ID and press "Enter." Enter your password and press "Enter." The server will log you in.
7.

Type "dir" (without quotes) and press "Enter" to display the FTP site's directories.
8.

Type "mget * mydirectory" (without the quotes), replacing "mydirectory" with the name of the directory you wish to copy, and press "Enter." Windows will copy everything from that directory to the directory you selected in Windows Explorer.
