  1. Select the range of cells you want to apply this format to.
  2. Select Format, Cells, and click the Number tab.
  3. In the Category field, select Custom. In the Type field, enter [<1].00¢;$0.00_¢
    Note: You can copy this format directly from this web page or, if you enter it yourself, remember that to get the cents symbol you need to hold down the ALT key and enter 0162,then release the ALT key.
  4. Click OK

To keep the entry a real number, you can give that cell (or range of cells) a custom number format.

In excel 2003 menus:
Select the range
Format|Cells|Number tab|custom category
type
00000
and finish up

You can also treat the entry as text.

You can preformat the cell as text (also on that Number tab in the format|cells dialog, then do the data entry.

Or you can start your entry with an apostrophe: '00023 Answered Mar, 13 2011
