The $LogFile is called the 'transaction logging file' and unless you have decided that the NTFS file system used by Vista is not what you want, it's an integral part of your computer system, and cannot be safely disabled. The Recycle Bin, and several other abilities of your computer depend on it. Many of the features Vista uses to help you do your work can easily be adjusted for better performance, but unfortunately this is not really one of them. You may enjoy learning about 'ReadyBoost' which, for the price of a small 'thumb drive', raised my system performance 10%.

I advise you not to switch off indexing. There's no way it could be having such an enormous effect on a computer of that spec.

You mean active Primary partition? Then you can achieve the goal by using Easeus Partition Master, it's totally free.

Assuming it is the first case it is very easy to fix. Go to Control Panel, and then choose the button for "Change Desktop Icons" on the left side of the screen. After that you can chose the icons you want back on the desktop by checking the box next to the name. You can also select restore default to restore all icons, including the hard drive icon to their normal icon.

If you icons are not restored by now, you should try an automated approach. It will also fix many other errors and system inconsistencies for you. It will save you a lot of headache and time. Answered Dec, 28 2010
