Blocking Pop-ups

Login as an administrator or an account with administrative credentials.

Click "Start," and select "Control Panel." Double-click the "Internet Options" icon. The "Internet Properties" window appears. Click the "Privacy" tab. In the section entitled "Pop-up Blocker," place a check mark in the box next to the words "Turn on Pop-up blocker." Click the "Apply" button.

Click the "Settings" button located to the right of the words "Prevent most pop-up windows from appearing." The Pop-up Blocker Settings windows appears. In the form field under the words "Address of website to allow," type any website you wish to have pop-ups enabled for, such as the website of your online bank. Click the "Add" button to add the website to the Allowed Sites list. Click the "Close" button when you are done. Close out to the desktop.

Click the "Start" button, and select "Control Panel." Double-click the Security Center icon. Look at the "Firewall" option. If a red highlight appears around the word "Firewall," click the down arrow to the right of the word "Firewall" and then click the "Turn on now" button to turn Windows Firewall.

Install and run an anti-virus product, whether a paid subscription or a free, stand-alone program. See the "Resources" section for the names of some legitimate anti-virus software vendors.

Keep your anti-virus software updated to stay safe from the latest threats. Most anti-virus software has an option to automatically update when an update is released by the vendor. Some software requires you to manually update, so make sure you do this frequently if your software requires this.

Be cautious when opening e-mail and visiting websites. Do not visit pornographic websites or websites that seem questionable in any way. Delete suspicious e-mails immediately, without opening them.
