U have to convert .mp4 to other format first. Because PPt does not support audio .mp4 file.

here's a list that works on powerpoint:

U can convert .Mp4 online. Here: http://media-convert.com/

Good luck!

at first you should make Powerpoint understand your MP4 video format or.. i think it will be useful for you. http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/Office/microsoft.public.powerpoint/2008-05/msg01572.html

Have a look at this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/235950/en-us

Powerpoint doesn't support .mp4 video to insert into. So, first, you need to convert its format by using a free video converter.
*PowerPoint 2010 supports .swf, .asf, .avi, .mpg or .mpeg, .wmv.
*PowerPoint 2007 supports .asf, .avi, .mpg or .mpeg, .wmv.

Then, follow the steps and insert it.
1.On the Insert menu, point to Movies and Sounds, and then click Movie from File.
2.Click the video you want to use and then click OK. Answered Jun, 08 2011

Powerpoint doesn't support mp4. You have to convert mp4 to avi or avi, or you can put the mp4 on the internet and insert a link to it on the powerpoint
