Typing Accents in Microsoft Word - go to the website shown in the Source. The "figures" refered to are at this website.

If you are using Microsoft Word 97, 98 or 2000, you can follow these steps to insert accent marks into your documents.

The Basics

To insert accent marks, go to the Insert menu and choose Symbol (see figure 1). A dialog box will appear listing all available symbols (mathematical symbols, foreign accents, wingdings, etc – see figure 2). In the Symbol dialog box, make sure that Font (at the top left of the dialog box) is set to (normal text).

Figure 1 - Selecting "Symbol" from the Insert menu

Figure 2 – The Symbol dialog box.

In the Symbol dialog box, find the symbol you want. Most accents for romance langauges (French, Spanish, Italian, etc) are in the lower four lines of the box. Once you’ve found the desired accent, click on it, and then click on Insert. The Symbol dialog box will close, and you will return to your document.

More Advanced Techniques – Shortcut Keys

The technique outlined above can rapidly become tedious, since you have to go into the Symbol dialog box for each accent you want to insert. Fortunately, Word has a shortcut. Certain key combinations are programmed to insert accent marks. These involve pressing the Control (Ctrl) key and one or more keys.

For example, to insert the é symbol (an acute e), you would press the Control key and the ' key (the single quote – in between the semicolon and Enter keys). The release these keys and type e.

Here is a table of common accents and their shortcut keys. Note: the ' key is not the same as the ` key. ' is the single quote (in between the ; and Enter). ` is a tick mark and is above Tab and to the left of 1.

If you forget the shortcut keys, you can find a list of them in the Symbol dialog box. If an accent mark has a shortcut key, it will show up when you click on it. See figure 3.

Figure 3. The Symbol dialog box showing shortcut keys.

In this example, è is highlighted. In the lower right of the dialog box, you see Ctrl+`,E. This notation means "Hold down Ctrl and ` (the tick mark). Then release them and press e."

Most of the accents have easy to remember shortcut keys:

Grave accents (à è ì ò ù) are formed with the ` key, which looks like a grave accent.

Acute accents (á é í ó ú) are formed with the ‘ key, which (sort of) looks like an acute accent.

Circonflex accents (â ê î ô û) are formed with the ^ key, which looks like a circonflex accent.

The cedilla (ç) is formed with the , key, which looks like a cedilla.

your best bet is to either search for a translator on-line or use character map under the start menu, only way i know how to do it, unless you buy a spanish keyboard, or change your computers language settings to spanish.

good luck
