Following is the steps to edit the Registry manually (Note: it's better to backup your registry first before you do any changes on it. See, How to backup Registry?)

1. Click "Start"
2. Click "Run"
3. Type "regedit" into the command line and press enter. The registry should load for your review.
4. Search the following areas for any remnants of the program

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREHKEY_LOCAL_M... the above two registry keys for any folder associated with the program removed.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCURRENTCONTROL... the services in the above folder. Look here for any services that are linked to the program. This action will ensure that the program is completely removed from your computer's registry. Answered May, 03 2011

Winrar it's a good option.
It can compress to winrar and winzip files. It also can decompress a several number of others formats.
The trial version last for 30 days but you still can compres / decompress files after the trial period has expired. You'll only have to deal with a annoying start window that encourage you to buy a license.

You can also stop using windows explorer and start using Total Commander. Not only it can replace it but it can also decompres several types of compressed files formats and can compress to winzip files.
