how to export skype contacts

sponsored ads

Is it possible to export skype contacts into some readable plain-text format?  Alternatively, is it possible to backup/restore contacts? I have found numerous tools on the internet and even tried some of them, but they don't seem to work as advertised :-( Please answer only if you have good experience with some tool. Thanks!

You can export your Skype phone book. To export your contact list, click on "Tools" and then "Advanced" in the Skype navigation menus. From there, you can choose to backup your contact list. The backup file is an exported version of your contact list.

Yes there is, and yes it's infinitely more simple than the amount of time I spent looking for the solution would lead you to believe. I've been searching for the last 6 1/2-7 hours and have finally found a do-able solution.

Summary
You're going to get an Extra from Skype that allows you to export your contact list as a .csv, import that into Microsoft Address Book, then sync that with your iPhone.

Version Information
For reference, I'm using Windoze XP SP3, iTunes 9.0.0.70, Skype 4.0.0.206 and an iPod Touch 3.1.2 jailbroken with BlackRa1n, though there's no reason this method won't work on every Windoze XP/Vista/7 computer, any Skype compatible with "Contacts Manager," an iTunes version that supports iPhone syncing, and any iPhone/iTouch.

Instructions
Go to Skype, Tools -> Extras -> Get Extras -> Miscellaneous -> Contacts Manager. Download it, then once it shows up in your "My Extras," click on it's green arrow/play button thing, select all the contacts you want to export, then click "Export." You'll have to name the file and choose it's extension (file type); choose csv.

Then, go to your Microsoft Address Book by clicking Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Address Book. There are two tree options in the left panel, "Shared Contacts" and "Main Identity's Contacts." I'm not sure what they mean, I clicked on "Shared Contacts," then went File -> Import -> Other Address Book, then clicked on the last option in the last called "Text File (Comma Separated Values)," and of course that's what .csv stands for.

Then, go to iTunes, plug in your iPhone, select it from the left panel, click on the tab on the far right that's called "Info," select the option to sync with Windows Address Book, hit "Apply" in the bottom right, and you're done!

Skype in-build contacts import has a few problems.

You can use Synqit to import Gmail contacts into Skype, but it will cost you $19 dollars.

1. Sign in to Gmail.
2. Click Contacts along the side of any Gmail page.
3. From the More actions drop-down menu, select Export....
4. Choose whether to export all contacts or only one group.
5. Select the format in which you'd like to export your contacts' information. Please note, some of these formats can lose some contact information.
6.To transfer contacts between Google accounts, use the Google CSV format. This is the recommended way to back up your Google Contacts.
7. To transfer contacts to Outlook, Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail, or various other apps, use the Outlook CSV format.
To transfer contacts to Apple Address Book, use the vCard format.
8. Click Export.
Choose Save to Disk then click OK.
Select a location to save your file, and click OK. Answered Feb, 14 2011
