I am completing an application form which is in Word, and I have to put a
tick in a box e.g.

I don't think this is too hard..follow the steps and hope this can help you

Right-click on a blank section of your toolbar. In pop-up menu, select
"Forms." This will open the Forms toolbar. On the Forms toolbar you'll see a
check/tick box. Simply click that and a box will be inserted at your
cursor/insertion point.

1. Click "Insert" and "Symbol" .
2. Select "More Symbols..." from the Symbol menu .

1. To add the boxes that you will be able to check, you need to use the Developer tab.
2. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Word Options.
3. Select the Show Developer tab in the Ribbon check box. Add the check boxes.
4. Click the top left cell in the table that you inserted. On the Developer tab, in the Controls group, click Legacy Tools.
Under Legacy Forms, click Check Box Form Field .
5. Click the next cell where you want to insert a check box, and then press CTRL+Y to insert another check box.
6. After you insert a check box for each item that you want, click the top right cell and type the text for the first item. Repeat this step for each item in the list. Answered Mar, 06 2011

Follow the steps to insert check box in word

To add the boxes that you will be able to check, you need to use the
Developer tab.
Show the Developer tab

Click the Microsoft Office Button , and then click Word Options.
Click Popular.

Select the Show Developer tab in the Ribbon check box.
Add the check boxes

Click the top left cell in the table that you inserted.
On the Developer tab, in the Controls group, click Legacy Tools.

Under Legacy Forms, click Check Box Form Field .

Note If the check box has a gray background, click Legacy Tools in the
Controls group, and then click Form Field Shading to remove the gray
shading.

Click the next cell where you want to insert a check box, and then press
CTRL+Y to insert another check box.
After you insert a check box for each item that you want, click the top
right cell and type the text for the first item. Repeat this step for each
item in the list
