It's possible to adjust the 'sharpness' of VLC, but I don't know whether it will improve matters for you.

You might get a better looking picture using some kind of 'soften' or 'blur' and you might be able to adjust the standard stuff like brightness, contrast, gamma, etc. But in the end those steps only mask the lack of quality. Answered Apr, 01 2011

First thing, you can check do make sure your USB ports support USB 2.0 which is much faster than USB 1.0. Then make sure you have the proper USB 2.0 drivers installed.

Next time you choose to upgrade check the resolutions on the camera, you want to have steady 30fps at 640x480 resolution, which is standard. You can choose to go more or less if you want.

Usually you can just lower the resolution of the camera with software to something like 320x240 and will be able to increase the frame rate to 30fps as opposed to 15fps which is how mine is.

If you just want to record video and have a digital still camera, usually they have a movie mode which takes better video than web cams do. Answered Jan, 07 2011
