how to convert png to 24 bit color

4 I have sims 3 create a world and have made a world which I want to install to my game, i know the image has to be 256 x 256 and I have done that. now I need to make it 24 bit colour. is it possible to do it in paint and let the file remain a .png?

Doing so will then Load the Image Conversion Window giving you many options:

Use adobe photoshop... CS2 or CS3 will do... (since lower versions don't support any images higher than the 8bit scale)
Go to Image > Mode then select whatever scale you want to convert it.

there is a difference between editing in 8 or 16 bits pixal depth and working with a image that a color depth of 8 or 16 or 24 bits, etc... there really 2 different things....
when you save you image as a jpg... the standard jpg format is that it is saved in 24 bit color!! so there should be no issue there... as far as your picture .. it will be 24 bit color!
