Compatibility mode doesn't have anything to do with whether or not you can edit documents.

If you can't edit, one of these conditions may be true:

- The document may be protected. On the Review tab, click the Protect Document button and choose Restrict Formatting and Editing to display the task pane. If you see a Stop Protection button at the bottom of the pane, click it.

- You may have neglected to activate your copy of Office. Click the round Office button in the upper left corner, click Word Options, choose the Resources tab, and click the Activate button.

- Your copy of Word (and Office) may be a trial copy that has expired. If so, you need to pay for a retail copy. Answered Dec, 22 2010

try to add some padding-left in there.
IE needs it sometimes.
