I need to get all the footage off my camera before I leave it for Costa Rica tonight, but I cannot open these .mts files with any program I have. Could someone please post a very simplified guide of how to convert one of these mts files to avi (high quality)? Very appreciate it.

Download Free HD Converter or from Hotfile and install it in your computer. It is a freeware designed to convert all your MTS and M2TS files encoded with AVCHD codec.
Launch Free HD Converter after installation.
Go to "File" -> "Add MTS/M2TS file".

On the right panel, you can see "Output Format" items. Change the resolution and aspect ratio to your need.
If you want to convert between PAL and NTSC, change the Fps, or the default Fps value is enough for a better quality. Otherwise, audio bitrate won't be able to match the video bitrate of an HD movie, so to prevent the sync problem, leave it default.
