How to Flip normals in 3ds MAx

In 3ds MAX, I merged a model in my scene, but I find that some faces are not shown. I knew the reason is that these faces’ normal are reversed, but I don’t know how to flip normals. Any help is appreciated.

Solution

In 3ds MAX, we can use Normal Modify to filp normasl. The modify allows you to unify or flip the normals of an object without applying an Edit Mesh modifier.

  1. In 3ds MAX 9, select the face which you want to flip normal.
    elect the face
  2. Find out the Modify at right side, click Modifier List and select Normal of OBJECT-SPACE MODIFY in the list.
    Select Normal modify
  3. In Parameters panel, the object appears to turn inside-out, since Flip Normals is on. Then you can see the surface is shown.
    Flip Normals
    show on
  4. If the object has some faces pointing inward and others outward, turn on Unify Normals to make all the faces point similarly.
    turn on Unify Normals

Tips

To flip or unify normals on portions of objects, convert to Editable Mesh and select Faces or Polygons. On the Surface Properties rollout in the Normals group, use the Flip and Unify buttons.
