How to Lock or Unlock Cell, Column or Row in Excel

It is usually occurs to me that we need to lock our cells, columns or rows of our excel files to prevent others' modification. Since I am a neophyte, I can't find a way to do this. So please tell me whether and how can I do this with Microsoft Excel 2007.

Solution

  1. Launch your Microsoft Excel and Open the file you want to lock.
  2. Select cells, columns and rows and then click format->format cells in Home ribbon.

  3. In protection tab, check Locked option. If you want to hide your formula, you can also check hidden. Then click Ok.

  4. Click Format->Protect Sheet.

  5. You need to type in a password to unptotect this worksheet and set allowed actions to this sheet. Click Ok after that.

    You need to confirm the password.

  6. Now your excel cells has been locked and password-protected. If others want to edit it, There will be a warning saying that this cell is read-only and cannot be editted.

Tips

If you want to unlock them, you can click Format->Unprotect sheet and then type in your unprotect password. Afer that, your sheet can be edited again
