I just start to use windows 7 system, and I want to change some system settings, but I do not want to use registry. I hear there is a group policy in windows 7 system, so I hope someone can tell me how to use gpedit in windows 7.

Solution

Group Policy is a set of rules which control the working environment of user accounts and computer accounts. Group Policy provides the centralized management and configuration of operating systems, applications and users' settings in an Active Directory environment. In other words, Group Policy in part controls what users can and can't do on a computer system.

  1. Click on "start" button, and then type "gpedit.msc" in the search box.
    Click on "start" button, and then type "gpedit.msc" in the search box.
  2. Press ENTER to open the Local Group Policy Editor window.
    Click on "gpedit" to open the Local Group Policy Editor window.
  3. In the Local Group Policy Editor window, you can undertake operations as desired.
    For an example, I want to apply the default user logon to all users.
  4. You should find the location of your goal item.
    In this case, browse the list as "Computer Configuration"->"Administrative Templates"->"Control Panel"
    ->"User Accounts"
    You should find the location of your goal item.
  5. Double click the icon to edit it.
    In my case, double click "Apply the default user logon to all users" icon to choose "Enable".
    Double click the icon to edit it.
  6. After the setting, click "OK". And you've achieved the goal.

Tips

If you come across the Gpedit.msc Missing error, you can download Gpedit.msc from Mediafire and place it in your system directory, such as C:\Windows\system32.
